Top 5 Best MMO Racing Games
Like all other sub genres of the ‘Free MMO’ / ‘Free MMORPG’ industry, MMO Racing games have thrived over the last few years. More and more big game publishers are releasing their own MMO racing games. Perhaps the most popular and best in the world is Nexon’s Kart Rider, as nearly 20% of South Korea’s entire population has played it at least once. Unfortunately though, Kart Rider isn’t available in North America or Europe yet, but there are a lot of other good MMO racing games. The top 5 Best MMO Racing games list below was compiled using review data from across the internet and from our own reviews here on MMOHut.
Top 5 Best MMO Racing Games
Need for Speed World is a 3D Racing MMO by Electronic Arts – the same company behind MMOs like Battlefield Heroes, Battleforge, FIFA Online and more. It is an extremely high quality racing MMO with silk smooth gameplay, gorgeous graphics and plenty of customization. Like Drift City and RayCity, the game has a large persistent world as well as a section for racing. It is by far one of the most beautiful MMOs available and a must play for fans of racing games.
I’m sure a lot of folks are going to disagree with me here, but I’ve personally had the opportunity to play every major MMO racing game out there and I can safely say Project Powder deserves the #1 spot here. It has smooth, varied and unique gameplay. Come on, a snowboarding MMO? That’s pretty unique, especially since every other MMORPG company is churning out generic car racing games. If you’re looking for a fun racing MMO, look no further than Project Powder. It’s one of the best MMO racing games out there.
3. RayCity
RayCity is 3D racing MMO developed by Electronic Art’s South Korean studio. The game plays a lot like Drift City from ijji, except with much nicer graphics. Graphically though the game is far behind Need for Speed World. Like Drift City and Need for Speed World, RayCity has a large persistent world city and a separate lobby based racing area. The game’s translations are quite bad but the gameplay itself is a fun.
4. Drift City
To be honest, It was hard putting Drift City below Project Torque, simply because Drift City is an incredibly unique racing game and certainly one of the best out there. Unlike traditional ‘lobby based’ racing games, Drift City has a large persistent world and a boat load of unique missions to complete. On top of that, the game has countless unique car parts and vehicles, making it one of the most varied and unique MMO racing games out there.
5. Tales Runner
To be honest, the only reason Tales Runner made it on this list is because the game is so incredibly unique. A racing game… without any vehicles! It’s a novel concept, and Tales Runner has proven that such an MMO could work. Now, the only thing left to do is polish the game up, as from my experience with Tales Runner, the game can be incredibly discouraging for newbies, as most of the tracks require memorization to master and there aren’t many players online. Nearly all of the courses and incredibly detailed and unique though, so if you haven’t played Tales Runner yet, it’s worth checking out for it’s novelty.

Level-R (a.k.a Project Torque) WAS i very nice game to play until a IP ban was
forced onto the non US players by the developer of the game (Invictus) in 2009.
Since then PT has lost a lot of good players and imho the community has fallen
appart.
There are several different versions of the game (for ex. JP, KOR & DE) and these
versions can only be played in that particular part of the world. I’m from NL and i
played PT because it rocked. Then Level-R in Germany started and i also began to
play that version. Invictus released some updates and transformed the game into a
kiddie racing game in which you need to play years to gain points and level up so
you can buy the ingame cars and/or parts. You can buy stuff with real money but
things are at insane prices… Before the Simulation handling was great but that
mode has been murdered and replaced by a Mario Kart Sim mode and a Arcade
mode where breaking is not needed to corner…
After the last big update Level-R (marketed by Gamigo) is a joke. PT (marketed by
Aeria) has remained as it was but they are also checking out the latest patch
called Isabel (early 2010). Level-R has lost a LOT of their following cuz of the idiotic
way they treat their community. Project Torque lost a lot to and BOTH will loose a
lot more if they are going to implement the latest patch Isabel…
I was a huge fan of both games… I was in the US and EU top 10 ‘drivers’ but after
the IP ban and the stupid updates (which ruined the game) i do not play either
games anymore…
I sincerely hope that there will be a new racing mmo in the future. I also hope the
people who are gonna create that game have learned from the actions that Aeria,
Gamigo and Invictus so that they will keep their members playing instead of pissing
them off…

I completely agree with you. The game’s community has dwindled away since the IP ban was placed. Nowdays, the game has so few players that it’s hard to find a race sometimes =/. Stupid developer is just isolating the playerbases and ruining the game =/

Dwindled is the understatement of the year
. I’m still able to play PT through a VPN
connection but the lag is horrid. After the IP thing a logged in a few times just to see
how the game and the community is holding up but it was like you said ReMo; races
are hard to find. Such a shame! Level-R (PT) was the best racing MMO ever!

i totally don’t agree with the 2nd place of PT.
I’m trying to starting the game from almost 2 days, and i’m still having some unknown problems…
I think think if a game deserves the 2nd place,it’s important to consider how much simple is to install the game…
And PT is NOT simple to install and run,if you have a problem at the beginning, you are SCREWED.totally.
DC is WAY better

I was a long time Upshift player until the admins simply stopped caring and the website went to cr@p. The club pages aren’t even accessible anymore and there hasn’t been an update since last November…*sighs* it was a dang good game while it lasted though.

Some nfsw players thinks that nfsw is the best racing game but i guess because of they didnt know the game that dont need to advertise itself. Snowbound online is the best racing game ever. NFSW can only be the best car racing game in car racing genre.

NFSW isn’t as great as it seems.
Sure the graphics are admirable, and sure it may seem like an exquisite game, but fact is, looks > gameplay in this game.
1.) You barely ever find english speaking players. It’s always people all over Europe. And it’s pretty dang hard to make friends.
2.) You can only level up to level 10, after that you have to pay for everything else. How dumb is that.
3.) Alot of the cars are limited like i said, due to the level restriction. As well as alot of tracks, and alot of free roam area.
So yeah. It’s not as great as it seems, and it’s just a combo of most wanted and carbon.

Drift City really should be #1, y’know? I’m a lvl 76, and once you are lvl 71, you can have almost ANYTHING in that game. Doesn’t take too long for most players.. only takes liek 2 months at the most for the average player to finish all the mishuns.
Just play it, its rlly fun ( besides the effed up tutorial at the start D:)
